Reserve Officer Program
Reserves
In 2007, the Kingsport Police Department revived a Reserve Police Officer program. Reserve officers have the same training and authority as any other police officer. The Reserve Unit is available to any division needing assistance. Goals are to improve operations by increasing staffing and productivity with a minimal cost to the organization. The Reserves provide services to the city and the public at no salary cost to the city by assisting in:
- Seatbelt and DUI Checkpoints
- Assisting in traffic speed enforcement
- Crime scene investigations
- Assisting in search and rescue operations
- Riding along with and backing up other officers
- Security for special events such as Fun Fest
- Taking walk in complaints at the Justice Center
The Kingsport Police Department currently has 13 active Reserve Officers. We hope to expand membership to 15 or 20 Reserve officers over the coming months. Reserve Officers are required to attend 168 hours of classroom training prior to beginning work as a reserve. This is followed by 200 hours of Field Training. After training is complete, policy requires that the Reserve Officer volunteer a minimum of one eight hour shift per month and complete 40 hours of in-service training on an annual basis.
If you are interested in becoming part of this program please visit our Employment & Volunteer Opportunities page for requirements and application information.
