Honor Guard Unit
The Kingsport Police Department's Honor Guard Unit was officially re-established in 2009 after the department had gone many years without an official unit. Prior to 2009, the Honor Guard Unit was comprised of mostly volunteers on an as needed basis having no formal training.
Beginning in 2009, an Honor Guard Unit was officially established and is now comprised of 20 members. The members were chosen from various areas of the department. The Honor Guard Unit trains at a minimum of 8 hours every month and conducts special training sessions prior to team activation.
As part of the Honor Guard Unit's re-birth, their uniform was redesigned to have a more traditional appearance and to give the unit a very distinct look.
Within the Honor Guard Unit, there are several smaller teams such as the Color Guard Team, Rifle Team, and Casket Team. Each smaller team has a specific mission and trains accordingly.
On July 5, 2010 the newly established Honor Guard Unit made its debut appearance by showcasing the Color Guard Team during the 2010 4th of July Parade.
